Flexible rogowski coil – MRC Series – 100A to 600A

SKU: EM MT RC MRC Category: Tags: , Brand:

Price range: R 690.00 through R 750.00

The MRC series is a new generation of flexible Rogowski coil (Rogowski® coil) current sensors, which are especially suitable for measuring in combination with portable devices. MRC coils have different sizes to cope with different conductors.

These coils can be easily install, especially in areas with limited space, unlike large cumbersome CTs (Current transformers)

It can be installed by opening up the coil and with out the need to switch of the electricity or disconnecting any wires.

The new generation of MRC coil strengthens the shielding layer and greatly reduces the influence of external magnetic fields; it can be directly connected to our rail-mounted and panel-type meters without the need for external integrators.

Frequently Asked Questions

The MRC series offers compact, flexible Rogowski coils specifically designed for portable measurement applications and smaller conductors. We offer three sizes in the MRC range:

Coil Size Selection:

  • MRC-16 (16mm window): Ideal for small cables and conductors – Rated for currents up to 100A
  • MRC-24 (24mm window): Suitable for medium cables and conductors – Rated for currents up to 300A
  • MRC-36 (36mm window): Perfect for larger cables up to 35mm diameter – Rated for currents up to 600A

Minimum Current Guidelines: For optimal accuracy with the MRC mini series, we recommend measuring currents that are at least 5-10% of the coil’s rated current:

  • MRC-16: Minimum current measurable accurately: ~1A, (230W at 230V)
  • MRC-24: Minimum current measurable accurately: ~3A, (640W at 230V)
  • MRC-36: Minimum current measurable accurately: ~6A, (200W at 230V)

Important Notes:

  • Rogowski coils can technically measure currents below these minimums, but accuracy decreases as the signal-to-noise ratio becomes less favorable
  • For applications requiring measurement of very low currents, consider using a smaller coil size even if your conductor could fit in a larger one
  • All our coils maintain excellent linearity and won’t be damaged by overloads
  • For applications requiring measurement of higher currents (above 600A), consider our NRC series

No, but UL-certified coils are available. However, the price for UL-certified coils is double the standard coil price. Product SKU: ULNRC-100

Warranty

These energy loggers has been field tested to be reliable and with a very low failure rate. If in the rare case something does go wrong, we will swop it out if still under guarantee. This energy logger has a two-year swop-out guarantee. As an authorised Meatrol repair centre, we can also repair Meatrol energy loggers and have stock of replacement parts.

What is a Rogowski coil?

Rogowski coils have been used for the detection and measurement of electric currents since 1912. They are based on a simple principle: an “air-cored” coil is placed around the conductor in a toroidal fashion and the magnetic field produced by the current induces a voltage in the coil. The voltage output is proportional to the rate of change of current. This voltage is integrated, thus producing an output proportional to the current. By using precision winding techniques, especially developed for the purpose, the coils are manufactured so that their output is not influenced by the position of the conductor within the toroid, and to reject interference from external magnetic fields caused, for example, from nearby conductors. Basically, a Rogowski coil current measuring system consists of a combination of a coil and conditioning electronics.

They can be used in similar circumstances to CTs (current transformers) but for many applications they have considerable advantages:

  • Wide dynamic range.
  • High linearity.
  • Very useful with large size or awkward shaped conductors or in places with limited access.
  • Thanks to the structure without hard core, the coil can be easily manufactured according to the application or to the available space.
  • Unlike traditional current transducers, there is no danger from open-circuited secondaries.
  • They cannot be damaged by large overloads.
  • They are non-intrusive.
  • They draw no power from the main circuit carrying the current to be measured.
  • They are also light weight and in some applications are light enough to be suspended on the conductor being measured.
