Flexible Rogowski Coil – MRC Series – 100A to 600A

SKU: EM MT RC MRC Category: Tags: , Brand:

Price range: R 690.00 through R 750.00 Incl. VAT

The price is per single coil.

The MRC series is a new generation of flexible Rogowski coil (Rogowski® coil) current sensor, which are especially suitable for measuring in combination with portable devices. MRC coils have different sizes to cope with different conductors.

These coils can be easily installed, especially in areas with limited space, unlike large, cumbersome CTs (Current transformers)

It can be installed by opening up the coil, and without the need to switch off the electricity or disconnecting any wires.

The new generation of MRC coil strengthens the shielding layer and greatly reduces the influence of external magnetic fields; it can be directly connected to our rail-mounted and panel-type meters.

Frequently Asked Questions

The MRC series offers compact, flexible Rogowski coils designed for portable measurement applications and smaller conductors. We offer three sizes in the MRC range — the window size determines which conductors the coil fits around:

Coil Size Selection:

  • MRC-16 (16mm window): For small cables and conductors up to ~15mm diameter – typically used on circuits up to 100A
  • MRC-24 (24mm window): For medium cables and conductors up to ~23mm diameter – typically used on circuits up to 300A
  • MRC-36 (36mm window): For larger cables up to 35mm diameter – typically used on circuits up to 600A

Why these are guidelines, not hard limits: Unlike a current transformer, a Rogowski coil has no iron core and therefore cannot saturate — the coil itself has no maximum current limit and cannot be damaged by overloads. The practical upper limit is set by the input range of the meter or integrator it is connected to, not by the coil size. So choose the window size to fit your conductor, and make sure your meter’s measuring range covers the current you expect.

Minimum measurable current: All MRC sizes produce the same output signal per ampere (the same mV/kA ratio), so the minimum current you can measure accurately depends on the sensitivity of the connected meter — not on the coil size. As a practical rule of thumb with our meters, currents from about 1A (roughly a 230W load at 230V) can be measured reliably. Below this, the coil still produces a reading, but accuracy decreases as the signal-to-noise ratio becomes less favourable.

Important Notes:

  • All our coils maintain excellent linearity across their full range and won’t be damaged by large overloads
  • There is no danger from an open-circuited secondary, unlike with conventional CTs
  • For applications measuring very low currents (below ~1A), contact us — a current transformer may be the better choice for your application
  • For larger conductors and bussbars, consider our NRC series

No, but UL-certified coils are available. However, the price for UL-certified coils is double the standard coil price. Product SKU: ULNRC-100

First, we need to confirm whether the 6kV circuits are sheathed cables or bare copper busbars:

If it is a sheathed cable:
All our standard Rogowski coils can be directly applied for current measurement, since the cable’s sheath provides basic insulation protection.

If it is a bare copper busbar:
Special high-voltage Rogowski coils dedicated to 6.6kV systems are required,  as they have higher insulation levels to adapt to the exposed high-voltage environment.

The default cable length is two meters; if you require a longer cable, it can be specially ordered and manufactured. The maximum length is 5 meters

The maximum length is 5 meters; if the cable is longer that, you will start to get inaccurate readings. The reason for this is that the Rogowski coils output very small voltages, typically 50 mV per 1000A. So if the cable is too long, you get voltage drops and interference.

What is a Rogowski coil?

Rogowski coils have been used for the detection and measurement of electric currents since 1912. They are based on a simple principle: an “air-cored” coil is placed around the conductor in a toroidal fashion and the magnetic field produced by the current induces a voltage in the coil. The voltage output is proportional to the rate of change of current. This voltage is integrated, thus producing an output proportional to the current. By using precision winding techniques, especially developed for the purpose, the coils are manufactured so that their output is not influenced by the position of the conductor within the toroid, and to reject interference from external magnetic fields caused, for example, from nearby conductors. Basically, a Rogowski coil current measuring system consists of a combination of a coil and conditioning electronics.

They can be used in similar circumstances to CTs (current transformers) but for many applications they have considerable advantages:

  • Wide dynamic range.
  • High linearity.
  • Very useful with large size or awkward shaped conductors or in places with limited access.
  • Thanks to the structure without hard core, the coil can be easily manufactured according to the application or to the available space.
  • Unlike traditional current transducers, there is no danger from open-circuited secondaries.
  • They cannot be damaged by large overloads.
  • They are non-intrusive.
  • They draw no power from the main circuit carrying the current to be measured.
  • They are also light weight and in some applications are light enough to be suspended on the conductor being measured.
